Monterey Baseball Player Grayson Phillips has seen growth on the mound this season.
Grayson has been pitching since joining the junior varsity team. He started playing baseball at Monterey in their tee-ball games. Phillips said his mom and dad have helped him along the way.
“They’re the ones that really got me into it,” Phillips said. “Me and my dad just throwing in the yard, just little stuff like that.”
Grayson Phillips is finishing out his sophomore season for the Wildcats. Phillips throws four pitches regularly. Phillips said his dad, along with the Monterey coaching staff, have helped him develop his pitches.
“It’s been fun so far, really fun,” Phillips said. “We’ve had a good time the past two years I’ve been here.”
Monterey finished 17-10 last season. Their season ended in the district tournament after falling to Smith County. Smith County would go on to lose in the finals of the state tournament.
“Grayson’s come in and he’s provided some really important innings for us throwing,” Monterey Baseball Head Coach John Looper said. “Him being a sophomore and coming back, it makes me feel good about next year knowing I can count on him on the mound cause everybody knows you can’t have too many pitchers.”
Grayson Phillips has started multiple games for Monterey this season. He also has entered in relief. Grayson is one of three pitchers to record a save this season.
Monterey stands this season with a record of 10-11.
