Monterey Baseball Manager John Looper said his Wildcats kept its never say die attitude going throughout last season.
Monterey comes off a season that saw them finish 17-10. They look to improve their finish to this season after falling in the first round of the district 5AA tournament. Manager Looper said his team always played hard.
“The big thing is just learning how to go about doing things and how to go about practice and, you know, when they’re expected to be doing what.” Looper said. “And, you know, it’s a little different from the junior high program they were in a year ago and just, the other guys doing things how they’re supposed to be doing and the younger guys can just sort of watch and catch on makes things very, a lot easier to transition for them.” Looper said.
Looper said his team treated every situation as if the score was 0-0. Monterey has started their 2025 season 4-2.
“We’ve had to rely on some young players.” Looper said. “They’ve performed and given us a chance to win, done their part, trying to just, trying to keep our heads above water until we get these injuries, this injury situation taken care of right now and hopefully before long it will be.”
Looper said he told his team while they might not win the district with their upcoming games, but they can lose it.
“We’ve just got to compete and, you know, try to put us in the best possible spot for the end of the year and regardless if it’s early or late in the season, you know, these all, all of them count so we’ve got to be playing, you know, every team’s in the same situation, it’s early everywhere, so we’ve got to be better than these other teams are.”
Monterey began their district play March 10th. They played a two game series against York. They won 3-2 at home before losing the next night on the road 6-4.
Monterey finished last season 6-5 in the district.
