Monterey senior soccer player Darinel Hernandez began to love soccer at a very early age.
Hernandez grew up playing soccer at six years old. He competed against his brothers often while playing on other teams. Hernandez said it feels good to play varsity soccer for the first time.
“We don’t have that much chemistry right now.” Hernandez said. “Our team is pretty young, they’re all freshmen, sophomores, so we’re all trying to work better together and win.”
Hernandez stands as one of the three team captains for Monterey in their first ever season. Hernandez said competing against his brothers early on inspired him to play even better.
“W’ere always competitive, so they really pushed me to get better every day.” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said the team is not that bad because they play together all the time.
“My job is to obviously be responsible for them, for their actions, do their job, practice well and take everything serious and not joke around and make sure they do well in school.”
Hernandez acts as one of three seniors for the Monterey Wildcats soccer team. Monterey has started 0-1-1 in their first two games. Hernandez said his goal is to win the rest of the way.
Monterey will look for their first ever varsity soccer win against Smith County.
