Cumberland Girls Finish Second in Subsectional Meet

The Cumberland County Lady Jets Track And Field Team placed second overall as a team in the subsectional meet.

They finished with 83 total team points, seven points above Stone Memorial. Station Camp won the meet with 169 points. Cumberland County Girls Track and Field Head Coach Stuart Bowen (boh-wen) said his team remained poised the whole day.

“They never batted an eye,” Bowen said. “They, whatever it takes for the team is whatever they were gonna do and so as long as we keep that mentality throughout the rest of the postseason, to do your best for yourself, that is important, but it’s also best, you know, for everybody, how can we be a good teammate.”

The Lady Jets sported eight girls on their track and field team this season. Injuries also were a factor this season, as some of the Lady Jets ran extra events in subsectionals. Bowen said Cumberland County operated better in their elements.

“I think our kids showed up ready knowing they had seen something already that was going to prepare them,” Bowen said. “I think more than anything, more than nervousness or anxiousness they just felt prepared.”

Bowen said he knew what to expect given the team’s resolve this season.

“They were just locked in, ready to go, and it was another day at the office,” Bowen said. “And they just did what they have been doing all year and kept getting better all year and it’s evident.”

The Lady Jets won a couple of events during the subsectional rounds. Sophomore Ivy Watson won the hundred meter hurdles by .07 seconds and the 300 meter hurdles by 2.63 seconds. Sophomore Caylin Hale won the 400 meter dash by more than three seconds. Watson and Hale qualified for sectionals with their individual performances.

The Lady Jets will seek their third appearance in the state tournament in the last four seasons.
