The Cumberland County Jets baseball team has improved their record by five games this season.
The Jets began their season 3-2 in non-conference games. Cumberland County started 3-0, scoring a combined 49 runs in those three games. They since lost their next two games giving up a combined 36 runs to William Blount and Knoxville Halls. Cumberland County Coach Tyler Thompson said he looks for his team to take good approaches in practice.
“Especially as we get into district play, we’re going to see a lot of good arms, we’re going to have adjustments as we go through the game and right now that’s kind of what we’re trying to, trying to ingrain into them.” Thompson said.
Cumberland started their district play March 17th in a series against Livingston Academy. They won their first game on the road 3-2 before losing at home to the Wildcats 3-0.
“We’re starting to figure things out.” Thompson said. “[Last] Monday was huge for us, showing kind of the depth that we have.”
Thompson said his team has used the recent days off to play loosely.
“We’re just trying to, to keep our arms, you know, where they need to be.” Thompson said. “We had some guys sore so they might have taken an off day but we got after it even though it’s technically an off day on their schedule.”
The Jets postponed their game last Thursday against Monterey due to rain. The game was supposed to mark their second of a three game home-stand. Cumberland County will conclude their home-stand Monday night against Stone Memorial.
“We expect a large crowd and it’s always nice to play at home. We get, we’re more comfortable we get to be in that routine and the guys are going to respond well because of it.” Thompson said.
