Cookeville to Begin New Youth Lacrosse League

Cookeville will begin a new lacrosse league this spring.

The new youth lacrosse league hopes to provide an opportunity to introduce a new sport for elementary school kids.. The league completed registration with 15 players. Co-founder Kurt Snider said he hopes for the opportunity to give the kids fundamentals of lacrosse.

“All the time we’ve known to really help the sport to grow would be to develop a youth program for say, grades second through fourth quarter. And uh, over time we just found the time to put it together and we’re excited that we’ve been able to get it going.” Snider said.

Kids will begin the season with two weeks of instructional training learning the basics of lacrosse. The league is set to begin next week after spring break concludes.

“i think it’s really important to expose your kids to different sports and try to see what really sticks out with them at an age when we are, kids are specializing at a really young age. We are quite the opposite of that.” Snider said. “I think it’s an opportunity for your son or your daughter even, only sons, unfortunately, we’re only a boys program at this point, to try the sport and see if you like it or not.”

Lacrosse was adopted as an official TSSAA sport this year. Cookeville joins other Upper Cumberland schools such as Upperman and Monterey with lacrosse programs already established.

The league will last from the end of March to mid-May with their tournament, which will also be sanctioned by TSSAA.
