The Baxter Police Department is purchasing new pistols to upgrade its fleet of firearms.
Baxter Police Chief Al Reyes said the department’s current fleet of weapons rated slightly behind. Reyes said the police department was awarded a group of evidence-based firearms and decided to trade the firearms to a gun dealer to get upgraded pistols for officers.
“That’s what are train of thought is to trade those and to trade the guns that we have currently and get these new pistols with these sites, and they come with holsters, and that way we will be just like everyone else around us,” Reyes said. “We are just like THP, the city, and the county.”
Reyes said that with the trade-in and recently selling a police car, the new pistols will cost the city next to nothing. Reyes said the new pistols will come with modern sights that will help officers perform better on the shooting range.
“They are known as RMRs, yes, it’s a red dot sight,” Reyes said. “Wherever the dot is, that’s where the round goes, and like I said, it just makes it so much easier for the officers.”
Reyes said having up-to-date firearms helps the department keep the community safe.
“In today’s world, it gives us a little bit of an advantage cause technology is a big deal, and as long as we can keep up with technology, it is an advantage for us,” Reyes said.
Reyes said he expects the new pistols to come in four to five months from now. Reyes said the department will have to have a range session to train officers in the new pistols.
