Monterey Fire Hall Receiving New Awning

The Monterey Fire Department will be replacing the awning to help prevent water intrusion at the fire hall.

The aldermen considered two bids, with one bid being $6,400 for a wood awning and a $10,000 bid for a metal awning. Monterey Fire Chief Kevin Peters said he believes the metal awning would be the better option.

“The wooden one is gonna have to have some kind of downward structure to hold it, you know, it’s just gonna be in the way, and it’s gonna be wooden,” Peters said. “That quote is not wrapped wood either, it’s gonna be exposed.”

After further discussion, the board ultimately approved the $10,000 bid for the metal awning. Peters said the new awning will be a big help as the building has had water intrusion issues for several years.

“Well, they have been going on apparently for years because of the water intrusion that we have inside,” Peters said. “This awning, it’s a 44-foot-long so it’s gonna cover three sets of windows, two doors, and hopefully, you know, take care of the intrusion that we are getting from the water.”

Monterey Mayor Alex Garcia said the town had budgeted an estimated $10,000 in the current fiscal year budget for the awning. Peters said Monterey signed the contract shortly after the meeting on Monday.

“Hopefully, it will get started and get finished by the end of this fiscal year,” Peters said.

Kevin Peters abstained from the aldermen’s voting due to a conflict of interest.
