Sparta Addressing Water Lines During Paving Process

Sparta beginning its spring/summer paving work, with this year’s biggest focus under the roads.

Public Works director Dillard Quick said 47 of 66 miles of road in Sparta has been paved in recent years. Quick said Sparta paves an average of four to seven miles of road per year.

“Well, some of the priorities… we have water lines and sewer lines that need to be addressed are under the roads,” Quick said. “So some of the roads that we wanted to pave, we actually have to do some underground work before we can do the paving.”

Quick said water lines will be done first so crews only have to pave once.

“We want to make sure that when we go in and pave the street, we’re finished with that street,” Quick said. “We’re not paving and then coming back and tearing up the road to put water lines and sewer lines in the ground.”

Quick said parking lots were added to this year’s paving list since most of the city roads have already been addressed.

“The only thing different this year is we’re getting some of the public parking lots that the city owns,” Quick said. “Whether its the public works building, or some of the parks in the city.”
