Roofing Bid For New Putnam School Facility Under Budget

A North Carolina company will replace the roof at the Putnam County School System’s new Extended Services Building.

The system purchased the former Frontier building behind Jackson Plaza last year. Deputy Director of Schools Tim Martin said the winning bid was $88,000, lower than anyone anticipated.

“We expected it to be a little over $100,000, I think we’d expected it to be maybe around $150,000, something like that,” Martin said. “So, you know, we were pleasantly surprised. it’s not, you know, it’s not going to be life-changing difference there, but, certainly pleasantly surprised.”

Martin said the contract calls for the replacement to be completed within 45 days.

Martin said the building is full. It houses Student Services, the Global Intake Center and the system’s Academic Coaches.

Martin said this is the same company, AAR Roofing and Sheet Metal, that replaced the roof at Upperman High School. Martin said the company will need a couple of months to get the supplies.

“They put down a kind of rubberized material called EPDM,” Martin said. “They put that down first and then it has rock over the top of it and then around the edges and a few other places, they put metal over the tops of that. So, it’s usually done it two or three stages.”

Martin said the roof comes with a 20-year warranty — he expects it will last longer.

Martin said this is the last of the planned renovations at the Extended Services Building on South Franklin Avenue.

“You know, my main job here is to help everybody else,” Martin said. “And so it means a lot to me when I get to take part in providing a better place for the people that work with me, to work and better offices and just space to do what they do. So, that’s what I get out of it.”
