Library Challenges Readers To Try Some Classic Novels

The Putnam County Library System wants you to pickup a page-turner and be part of the Classic Novel Challenge.

Participants will read four classic novels from the library’s list and answer a question about each book they read. Library Director Kathryn Wisinger said participants earn a prize if they complete the challenge.

“We have a lot of people who come in, of course, for contemporary fiction,” Wisinger said. “And we wanted to think of a way to try to get our patrons to expand their reading a little bit. More diverse genres and styles.”

Wisinger said classic novels influenced contemporary literature. Wisinger said the library has a large classic novels both on the shelves and digitally.

“They also help people as a connection point between past and present, because they’re often shaped by their time period,” Wisinger said. “It’s a very interesting thing to read about, or read a novel that was written 100, 150 years ago.”

Wisinger said classic books are still relevant today.

“I think you can see a lot of parallels between the novels of the past and the ones that are here in the present moment” Wisinger said.

The Putnam County Library’s Classic Novel Challenge runs through September 22.
