Al Anon has expanded to Fentress County, offering residents a support group for people impacted by a loved one’s substance abuse
Organizer Barbara Peterson said she has been involved with the program for 17 years. She said the Jamestown chapter gives participants a local option to get the support they need without traveling long distances.
“For folks that are suffering from the pain of seeing their loved ones going through addiction, it’s such an important part of the other person’s recovery, as well as for the person who’s seeing that take place,” Peterson said.
Peterson said the program has been well received in the community. She said she sees a very consistent group of people attending the sessions.
“That’s what Al Anon is all about,” Peterson said. “It’s trying to bring some peace, some comfort, and some support for people who are impacted by someone else’s substance abuse.”
While several programs exist to support addicts, Peterson said is is important to lift up others walking through addiction.
“Al Anon gives focus to that person, that they matter too,” Peterson said. “And they have to take care of themselves as well. They too need to have a good life and a life of serenity.”
Peterson said having a local chapter keeps people from using a trip to Crossville or Cookeville as an excuse.
Peterson says there are books, pamphlets, and other materials available , but AL Anon’s best resource is the people that attend the weekly meetings. The group meets in the Jamestown Community Room at 414 North Main St. on Tuesdays from Noon to 1pm.
