Sparta Updating Street Plan

Sparta’s GIS Department working to update the city’s street plan.

Sparta G.I.S Coordinator Daniel Marcum said the plan last updated in 1996. Marcum said the department making sure the road plan includes accurate streets and roads, along with proper classifications. Marcum said having an updated street plan will be very useful.

“These things get used for when we are trying to figure out our paving schedule for the year to make sure that we pave all of the roads that we need to, specifically the ones that we own and we don’t go outside of our bounds,” Marcum said.

Marcum said the department is in the preliminary stages of updating the street plan. Marcum said he is aiming to have the street plan fully updated by Fall.

“Once I complete the preliminary map then that has to go to the planning commission for approval, and then once it meets their criteria then it will go on to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen for approval,” Marcum said.

Marcum said only a handful of roads need to be added to the street plan. Marcum said most of the work will be changing the road classifications.

“The roads are classified as either arterial streets, you know, the major streets, or collector streets, or local streets, and a lot of those classifications will change just because of the way things have developed or the way traffic patterns have changed over the years.”
