Overton County Schools will offer free breakfast and lunch to children in need this summer.
Overton School Nutrition Program Director Debie Taylor said some kids in Overton County lack access to meals outside of school. Taylor said the program feeds some 500 kids every day during the summer.
“They say 18 and under,” Taylor said. “And I know little ones that are two or three years old. Most of the time those are not a student. But as long as it’s a child 18 and under, they can come and get a meal.”
Taylor said the district usually delivers meals to the City Park and the City Pool, since parents often leave their kids there for the day. Taylor said the program is grant funded.
“Sometimes the library will tell us about programs that they’re hosting through the summer,” Taylor said. “Like a reading program, and we take meals there and provide meals for children when they’re there for an event.”
Taylor said the district feeds kids at summer school and summer camps, too.
“The instructors will let me know that they’ve got this camp going,” Taylor said. “And that they’ve got however many children enrolled, and they would like to have meals provided. So we do that as well.”
Taylor said the program must cover an area where many children need federal assistance. You can reach out to the School System to learn more about the program.
