Work set to begin on Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity’s newest home, making home ownership a reality for an Overton County family.
Habitat’s Director of Development Kasey McCarty said the agency has chosen a site in the city limits of Livingston. McCarty said one of the biggest misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity is that the homes are given away. McCarty said the homes are a hand-up not a hand-out.
“So the home buyers have to go through a process,” McCarty said. “They have a mortgage on the homes and it’s providing affordable housing and it is building a future filled with hope.”
McCarty said the increase in cost of materials is always a concern for the agency. McCarty said that is why fundraising events are so helpful.
“It’s harder, it becomes more of a challenge, especially with a funding perspective,” McCarty said. “And so that’s why it really takes a community effort to come together. I know Kevin, our director of construction, does an amazing jobs with the different homes we have to build. But again, it circles back to we can’t do this without the community.”
