Two Storybook Trails Opening in Fentress Wednesday

Two Fentress County Storybook Trails will be unveiled at ribbon cutting ceremonies Wednesday.

Reading Ambassador Brittany Swafford helped organize the storybook trails. Swafford said a storybook trail is a park trail decorated with pages of a book, mixed with activities for kids. Swafford said the trail offers a great way to expose kids to nature and reading.

“You could start with page one and continue walking down the trail with your family, and make it to page two where you’ll find some questions and activities that you can do along the way,” Swafford said. “It’s really just meant to be an engaging, literacy-based activity to get kids moving and reading all at the same time.”

South Fentress Park features the story of Dragons Love Tacos. The Jamestown City Park trail tells the story of Raindrops to Rainbows.

Swafford said storybook trails in Tennessee are grant funded, and the story panels are interchangeable.

“We also had a lot of really great help and input from our county that allowed our funds to be spread out a little bit more,” Swafford said. “So we actually have already purchased the panels to rotate and replace those books with some more as the year progresses.”

Swafford said the books on the trails are part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation funded the grant for the storybook trails.
