Pickett Hosting Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Pickett County can take care of some spring cleaning Saturday as the county hosts household hazardous waste collection event.

Pickett County Executive Stephen Bilbrey said the event comes through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Bilbrey said residents can bring waste ranging from automotive products, batteries, house cleaning products, paint thinners, and pesticides.

“It’s really a good event for Pickett County for the citizens to get rid of some things that you can’t normally put in the landfill or really don’t need to dispose of, you know, down your drain or toilet or anything,” Bilbrey said. “So you can bring those up and get rid of them and it doesn’t cost you anything. It’s a free event.”

The event will take place at the County Landfill located at 3065 Gib Moles Rd. The collection event will run from 8am-12pm on Saturday.

Bilbrey said the county’s landfill does take hazardous household waste from time to time, but collection events like this help the overall health of the landfill. Bilbrey said the collection event will not accept waste from businesses, schools, or churches.

“You can call the state of Tennessee if you are a commercial business and talk to them if you have those type of waste, and they will do it, they do charge commercial businesses, churches, schools, and different things,” Bilbrey said. “I’m not sure what the rate is or what the fee is, but this day here is just for households and households only.”

Bilbrey said the collection event is part of a grant the county received from the state. Bilbrey said the county does not have to pay for the event.

“We don’t have to pay anything for it,” Bilbrey said. “It’s a non-matching grant, and they do these events across the state of Tennessee. We do have to apply for the event, usually somewhere around December.”
