The Sparta Fire Department looking to add to its fleet of fire trucks.
Fire Chief Kirk Young said the board of mayor and alderman voted unanimously to allow his department to spend up to $325,000 for a used 100-foot ladder truck. Young said the truck is needed to serve the city’s three and four-story structures.
“We have a ladder truck now, but it is 35 years old and it is only 75-foot,” Young said. “We’re needing to upsize it to better serve our community.”
Young said a 100-foot ladder truck will also better equip the department to battle blazes at larger buildings.
“It helps in our industrial areas as well,” Young said. “As far as reaching areas that it is hard for the men to get to. But yes, it will serve the citizens and the industry a lot better than what we have now.”
Young said he will search for the truck through on-line auctions. Young said he asked the board of mayor and alderman for the $325,000 because he had seen some in the past sell for that amount.
“We are looking now,” Young said. “Captain Taylor as a matter of fact, talked to me today and he has seen one, it’s already gone. But we will do our best to find something that suits our needs and our qualifications as soon as possible.”
Young said once they get the new ladder truck the old one will likely be sold.
