Overton Appraisal Notices Arriving, Values Increasing

Overton County property owners will soon find notices in their mailbox showing the latest state-mandated appraisal for their property.

Overton County Property Assessor Kara Boone said state officials spent most of last year in her office reviewing property deeds needed to make the every five-year appraisal.

“I am actually expecting all of our residential properties, farms and commercials to double in value,” Boone said. “They are selling for double what we had them listed for in 2020. I’m expecting to see those numbers.”

Boone said the assessment change notices were mailed out starting Wednesday.

“So a lot of confusion comes, thinking, okay, we are getting these property new assessment notices, it looks like Nashville and Cookeville prices, they are not,” Boone said. ” The state pulls the deeds with that sworn consideration to see what Overton County is selling for.”

Boone said the double in reappraisals does not mean property taxes will double. It is simply the state’s process to show property worth in an open market. Boone said if a property owner disagrees with the state’s calculation they first need to ask for an informal hearing at Boone’s office.

“They can call our office and speak to myself or a member of my staff or someone with the state to discuss the appraisal,” Boone said. ” And then if we cannot explain it well enough to satisfy the, they can make an appointment to go before the Board of Equalization in June.”
