Cookeville’s Smith Growing On, Off the Baseball Diamond

Cookeville Cavalier shortstop Tyler Smith continues to see growth in his game.

This year, Smith ranks top five in most offensive categories. Smith has 24 hits this season, fourth on the team, and leads the team in at-bats and plate appearances. Smith said he credits the Cookeville coaching staff for helping him grow.

“They mean everything,” Smith said. “There’s, they’re my favorite coaching staff I’ve ever had in my life. I mean I’ve learned so much, even just about not even playing baseball, just as being, becoming a man and stuff like that.”

Tyler Smith currently plays shortstop for the Cookeville Cavaliers. Smith said one thing he has learned playing at Cookeville is practicing rundowns.

“We don’t want mistakes in rundowns. Rundowns are an easy out,” Smith said.

Smith recently helped Cookeville complete a rundown in a recent victory. Smith said he has a lot of fun playing defense.

“I just feel like knowing what to do in certain situations as a shortstop to help my second baseman or third baseman,” Smith said. “Just knowing everything, every play, knowing what to do in all those situations.”

Smith’s fielding percentage stands second highest among qualified Cavaliers this season. Tyler Smith has played shortstop for as long as he has played baseball. He also has played everywhere on the infield during his baseball career.

Tyler Smith will conclude his junior year regular season Saturday when the Cavaliers travel to Rossview.
