Upperman High School’s Head Softball Coach Beau Winningham said there is a growing need for an indoor hitting facility.
Currently, the Upperman Softball team has nowhere to practice, traveling to a local hitting facility in order to practice hitting. Winningham said sometimes the team shows up to the facility and all cages are booked. Winningham said having their own indoor hitting facility would help improve the team.
“I would say our biggest weakness right now is hitting so given an indoor facility that we could practice in year-round you know, no restrictions on weather or anything,” Winningham said. “It would help us tremendously you know, when the season rolls around.”
Winningham said the team has been trying to get an indoor hitting facility for years and now he feels like the team does have the school administration on board. The School Board has the facility on its plan.
“In speaking with the people that are kind of trying to help facilitate this you know, there’s some things, some ideas that are floating around out there that we are just trying to make one of them stick so that we could have a facility,” Winningham said.
Winningham said he wants a multi-purpose indoor hitting facility but at this point is willing to take anything the team can get. Winningham said an indoor hitting facility would be a way of showing support for the program.
“I think it would be beneficial and showing pride and we are investing in our team but also you know, having girls come to this area and want to go to Upperman and you know, if they want to play softball then they have that opportunity od so in a facility,” Winningham said.
Winningham said the top teams in the district all have hitting facilities on campus. Winningham said not having a hitting facility is a major competitive disadvantage. Winningham said his goal is to have a hitting facility within the next couple of seasons.
