Highland Rim Kindergartner 3rd In State Essay Contest

Highland Rim Academy Kindergarten Student Mateo Podesta placed third in the K-2nd grade division in the Secretary of State’s Civics Essay Contest.

Highland Rim Academy Director of Advancement Casey Overstreet said the youngest students were asked to draw a picture and write a few sentences about the difference between fact and opinion. Overstreet said Podesta entered into the contest as he loves to draw and learn.

“He loves to ask questions, he loves to participate in class and so I think really just the opportunity to learn and to use his skills and talents was what interested him in being a part,” Overstreet said.

The essay contest is designed to prepare students to become engaged and informed citizens. Overstreet said Podesta is a good example that it is never too young to learn.

“I think it’s important for us to just understand our importance as citizens and the role that we play within our community,” Overstreet said. “Mateo has represented that so beautifully as a Kindergartner, someone who is already interested in just becoming a leader and learning and growing.”

Overstreet said Highland Rim Academy is extremely proud of Podesta and his accomplishment. Overstreet said just like the other students at Highland Rim Academy, she believes Podesta has a bright future.

“To see him already being an achiever at such a young age, just has us so excited about what he is going to accomplish in the years to come,” Overstreet said.

Podesta was awarded a TNStars 529 College Savings Program scholarship and recently visited the State Capitol. Overstreet said Podesta got to serve as a house page for State Representative Ryan Williams during a house session.
