Expanded Monterey Park Offerings Lead To New Rules

Monterey set to enact new rules and regulations for the town’s parks.

Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said the town’s expansion of park offerings prompted the creation of a new ordinance that deletes the one that’s been on the book for decades. The new rules include fines.

“It covers us pretty much everywhere you can look as far as what we offer for the town, parks and recreation wise, it’s going to cover us,” Cleary said. “We feel confident it’s a good, good tool and good resource for us to go by moving forward.”

Cleary said there has been a great deal of effort by the town to increase the amenities at Meadow Creek Park and Bee Rock. Cleary said most of them were not included in the existing set of rules.

“We’re now at Meadow Creek Park offering, you know, kayak rentals, mountain bike rentals and nearly 13 miles of hybrid walking and mountain bike trails.” Cleary said. “There’s a 90-acre lake within the 300-acre park. We have a 30 by 50 picnic pavilion, a new boat dock.”

Cleary said the new ordinance includes rules pertaining to the 24 rock climbing routes at Bee Rock. Those were not on the first ordinance either because the town took it over when it was donated to the town in 2019.

“Due to great work of our board of alderman over the past several yeas in being progressive and trying to provide a good quality of life, it was time for us to totally revamp our rules and regulations.” Cleary said.

Cleary said the town is utilizing multiple initiatives to get the word out about the new rules and regulations.

“We will do it by means in which we’re speaking now, through print and radio and telling the story of what’s about to change and what’s happening in Monterey,” Cleary said. “And just by word of mouth.”

Visitors will be able to access the rules via the town’s website.

The board of mayor and alderman has passed the measure on second reading. A third and final reading is set for May.
