Van Buren Students Growing Plants To Learn, Raise Money

Student learning at Van Buren High School means spring colors for your home during the annual FFA Plant Sale.

Ag Instructor Kurt Maynard said the students are selling flowers and vegetables they grew in the schools’ greenhouse as part of their course work.

“They grew these plants from seeds, some of them from plugs,” Maynard said. “And then we sell them, you know, starting now and raise money for the FFA.”

The plants include Maynard said the students enjoy the hands-on experience they get with growing plants.

“We’ve got a lot of kids, they’re very eager,” Maynard said. “They’d rather do hands on work than work out of a book, of course we can’t do that a hundred-percent but most, most all kids learn best by doing.”

Maynard said the students are learning skills they can use at their home as adults.

“Whether it be in the garden or whether it just be in a flower bed or whatever,” Maynard said. “So, the things that they learn here in the horticulture is just valuable to them as an adult. Whether or not the go as a professional or not making a living at it.”

Petunias, begonias, vinca, tomatoes, peppers and squash are month the types of plants available for sale.

You can purchase plants from eight to two at Van Buren High School.
