Algood Courts To Get Updated Lighting Before Fall

Algood has set a goal to replace lights at the tennis and pickleball courts by the end of the summer.

Algood originally proposed replacing the lights when bidding out to repave and re-stripe the courts about a year ago. But the project came in over budget. City Administrator Keith Morrison said getting the lights back on is not a simple fix.

“The wiring that is there is just old and outdated and dangerous and so we are gonna have to pull the meter and rewire it,” Morrison said. “We’ve got a line break somewhere in the ground that’s causing it to not get power to the lights so we are going to replace all of that and get it running.”

Morrison said the city has not received an estimate on how much replacing the lights would cost. Morrison said the goal is to have lights up and running within the next two to three months.

“The summer season it gets hot during the day so a lot of folks like to play at night when it cools off a little bit,” Morrison said. “So being able to turn those lights on and use that facility extends their use quite a bit and it gives a lot more folks a lot more opportunity to use them after dark.”

Morrison said the city has received a few complaints about the courts not having lights. Morrison said replacing the lights in the final phase of the court renovation project.

“We’ve been trying to work on getting the courts fixed,” Morrison said. “They had some huge cracks and holes in them and we have been trying to repair that and so we are getting to the point now that we are ready to get the lights fixed now that the courts are up and look really good.”
