Cookeville Baseball Preparing for 5 Straight Games

The Cookeville Cavaliers baseball team set to begin the longest set of games of the season so far.

Cookeville will travel to Wilson Central Tuesday to start a series with the Wildcats. The Cavaliers will then travel to Sparta to face White County the next day. Cookeville will then finish the week at Rockvale on Friday. Cookeville Baseball Head Coach Derek Bush said this week will show how much pitching depth the Cavaliers possess.

“When you get into postseason baseball, it’s kind of all hands on deck.” Bush said. “Next week will kind of mirror that mentality of we’ve got a lot of games, but we’re gonna see some guys and see what they can do in some hinge moments, you know, put some guys’ feet to the fire and see if they can produce in big spots.”

Cookeville has held their opponent to four runs or less in seven of their nine wins. Bush said making the routine plays will be key.

“We kind of have this thing that if we can keep the other team scoring less than four runs, we usually win the ball game and that’s held true in most cases,” Bush said. “When we played fundamental defense and we pound the strike zone, we put us in a good spot.”

Cookeville scored 29 runs combined in their sweep over LaVergne. In that series, the Cavaliers threw first pitch strikes 75 percent of the time. They gave up three runs the entire series.
