The City of Smithville will hold the official dedication of Aaron Tippin Alley Tuesday.
Council members approved the naming the owner of three number one hits on the country music charts. Tippin and his wife Thea have called DeKalb County their home for several years. Smithville Mayor Josh Miller said the decision just made sense.
“We just know he is a hometown guy and has had a very successful career,” Miller said. “We thought it would be good for him and his family at this time.”
Aaron Tippin Alley is between West Main and Market Streets in the downtown district. The signage has already been installed and there’s a wall mural featuring the country crooner.
“It’s just kind of got his career and different things on the wall,” Miller said. “Mr. Tippin, you know, he’s a pilot and a lover of planes and of course that’s associated with the mural as well.”
It’s been more than a year since the city council approved the naming. Miller said because Tippin continues to have a busy music career, this was the first date that was agreeable. Miller is hopeful this will become a tourist destination.
“I just think it will give the city recognition,” Miller said. “It’s a draw for downtown, they will take their picture by the mural and things.”
The dedication takes place Tuesday at 5:30pm.
Country music singer John Anderson also calls DeKalb County home. He, too, has alley named in his honor. It connects West Main and West Walnut. It was dedicated back in November of 2022.
