Algood Fire Offering Free CPR Class Tuesday Night

If you’ve been wanting to learn Hands-Only CPR, you will have the chance Tuesday as the Algood Fire Department hosts an event at city hall.

Fire Chief David Judd said he saw the need for the class after several calls in which firefighters were sent just to do CPR. Judd said he hope participants will learn they do not have to be a medical professional to help someone in need.

“After talking to the citizens who were involved in those calls, a lot of them didn’t have the information to do CPR,” Judd said. “They just didn’t know how to get that, so, I got with the American Red Cross and we came up with the idea.”

Judd said the residents shared they were afraid they would do more harm that good if they tried to perform the potentially life-saving skill.

“They said they were so nervous and so afraid the first time they were ever in that situation,” Judd said. “For the public out here who are not faced with this every day, it is very easy to be afraid and be afraid you are going to push too hard or you’re not pushing enough.”

The free Hands-Only CPR course takes place Tuesday starting at 6pm at the Algood City Hall.

“Giving the public a chance to come out and be taught the correct way of doing it and being able to perform these in a controlled environment with trained professionals kind of guiding them will help everybody’s confidence,” Judd said.
