Sheriff Accused Of Falsifying Records, Faces State Hearing

Fentress County Sheriff Michael Reagon faces a hearing in the next several weeks following allegations of falsifying reports.

The Tennessee Peace Officer and Standards Training (POST) Commission alleged Reagon asked a subordinate to complete a multi-hour online academy training in his place. The POST Commission agenda also noted Reagon not meeting pre-employment standards.

Reagon faces decertification, meaning he could not practice law enforcement in Tennessee.

The commission discussed its investigation in a March 21 meeting, saying, in part, Reagon attempted to defraud the state because he could have received a salary supplement for completing the training. Reagon apologized for his actions. Commissioners determined that Reagon would need to appear to defend himself.

A date for that hearing has not been set. State Officials said it usually happens in the next month.

Reagon has been sheriff since the summer of 2017. The Fentress County Commission appointed him to the position after the previous sheriff resigned.
