Monterey Boys Soccer Head Coach Eneblio Perez said he is settling into his new role.
This season marks the first for Monterey with a boys soccer team. Perez said it is an honor for him to be the first head coach.
“I’m feeling proud of them pretty much from this season because we haven’t been playing bad lately.” Perez said. “And for being the first time, I guess we’re just doing good and we keep doing that or going for, fighting for it next year also.”
Monterey previously went up to middle school for their boys soccer teams. Perez said everyone was nervous, but excited when the high school team was announced.
“We’ve been doing good and I’m happy for the boys and hopefully, we can see some improvements for them also.” Perez said.
Perez has played soccer since he was eight years old. He started a YMCA in Monterey where he began his coaching career. Perez said he tries to help the kids as much as he can.
“My favorite part is get to know the players, interact with them, become friends with them, and I guess just, that just makes me want to learn something more about them.” Perez said. “And I have kids also, so I mean, I try to enjoy being with them and being with my kids cause I think we still have to kind of, have to interact with them, get to know them better, and make them feel like you’re their friend also.”
Perez said he wants to see respect for the team and for others. The Monterey Wildcats have opened their first season 0-1-1. They look for their first win next Tuesday as the Wildcats battle Smith County.
“I would like to thank everybody, especially Monterey High School, for making this happen, something we always wanted.” Perez said.
