The Lady Pioneers will begin their quest to continue their season Friday night.
Warren County finished in fourth place in the District 9-AAAA tournament last weekend, securing them a spot in the regional tournament. The district tournament saw the Lady Pioneers lose to undefeated Coffee County and then Shelbyville in the consolation game. Head Coach Kyle Turnham said last week provided a tremendous opportunity for his squad to grow.
“We’re so busy trying to improve on the weaknesses and trying to take us another step every single day,” Turnham said. “But I see things every single day in practice, I see things every single game that we have that I haven’t seen before.”
Turnham and Warren County look to continue their season Friday night as they face the Brentwood Lady Bruins. The matchup Friday night marks the first ever matchup between the two schools.
“Even the development this team has demonstrated since November and December, even into stages of February is just really refreshing that these girls have stayed the course.” Turnham said. “To have a chance to watch this and watch them be successful and see the smile on their faces and the drive they’ve been demonstrating lately, it’s a really fun thing to watch.”
Turnham said the development remains in his team even after playing in the district tournament.
“I see them start to think the game a lot more on their own.” Turnham said. “And I see them communicating with each other about things that are going on out there on the floor and timely scoring situations.”
Turnham took over the Warren County Lady Pioneers after last season, where the Lady Pioneers finished 5-22, eliminated in the first round of districts by Columbia. This year, the win total has doubled to ten as Warren enters their second regional tournament in three years.
The Lady Pioneers went to the regional semifinals in their last tournament appearance. They lost to the overall number one seed Bradley Central, who went on to win the state tournament that season.
