Council Explores GPS, Dash Cams Systems In City Vehicles

Cookeville Officials want to install dash cam and GPS systems in city vehicles to help with safety and security.

City Manager James Mills said the proposed contract would provide services for three years, at an estimated $46,778 per year. Mills said the city has completed a trial run of the GPS and dash cam systems and they both have already proven to be very beneficial.

“We believe that this will provide a big benefit for the city,” Mills said. “I think it will cut down on false claims about failure to deliver services. It will discourage misuse of city vehicles and it will allow us to better schedule routes for service vehicles.”

Mills said the systems also assist in the upkeep of the vehicles. Mills said the plan is to install GPS systems in all city vehicles and install dashcams in 42 of the city’s larger vehicles including garbage trucks.

“It also will provide a lot of different information for maintenance of vehicles,” Mills said. “Gas mileage, how the cars and trucks are driven, so we think we will get a lot of valuable information from this.”

Mills said the police department would not be included as they are already required to have similar systems and have a separate contract.

Mills said the city has talked about implementing a dashcam and GPS system in city vehicles since November. The Cookeville City Council will consider approving the contract Thursday.
