Center For Craft Prepping For Annual Day Of Learning

The Appalachian Center for Craft is prepping for its annual Celebration of Craft Saturday.

The free event features music, dance, workshops, demonstrations, from blowing glass to weaving. Director of the School of Art, Craft and Design Kim Winkle says the event began in the 1990s when the facility was at risk of closing due to budget cuts.

“Through a grass roots effort the community really voiced their love for the craft center as well as expressing the role that the craft center has within our community,” Winkle said. “So through this grass roots effort we were able to keep the craft center and that’s how celebration started.”

Winkle says the goal is for folks of all ages to learn about both traditional and contemporary crafts and relax.

“To create an opportunity and a space for our students and our community to immerse themselves in the act of making or to be able to express themselves,” Winkle said. “They can escape from the stresses of daily life and that’s really important.”

The Celebration of Craft takes place on the campus of the Appalachian Center for Craft, located just off Highway 56. The event takes place from 10-5.
