Tech Mens Golf Starters Young But Gaining Experience

The Golden Eagles return only two of their five mens golfers for the spring season.

Junior Haden Maxwell marks the only upperclassman on the Golden Eagles starting five. Sophomore Alex Broyles stands as the only other returning golfer on the team. Tennessee Tech Head Coach Polk Brown said he used the fall season as a learning curve for his team.

“It’s a team sport and we got to have five guys out there every day that are capable of playing some high level golf.” Brown said. “I love this group, they work really, really hard and I think it’s eventually going to come together for us. I’m excited for this spring.”

Tennessee Tech’s starting lineup will also consist of a sophomore transfer in Matthew Shull and two freshmen, Hil Thompson and Spencer Stuke.

“I think we got a very exciting group of guys.” Brown said. “Very cohesive group of guys who love each other and push each other. They just love being out there and competing.”

Brown said the more experience they gain, the better the team can become.

“We’ve been very fortunate with the facilities we have to us.” Brown said. “We’ve been able to tackle all the weather situations that have come our way.”

Among the facilities the golf team uses is an indoor golf simulator used early in mornings and a putting green located in the indoor football stadium. Brown said his team has used both, alongside other facilities, in the event severe weather occurs.

“The main thing is the guys have a good attitude about it and they embrace it and that’s what they’ve done, so I think that’ll serve us well as we get ready to start the spring.” Brown said.
