Monterey has not received any bids to repair the town’s police station since the process began last month.
Mayor Alex Garcia said the town will have to reach out to a company directly and ask what it will cost to fix the station if no bids come in. Alderman Jamie Phillips asked why the town’s insurance is not paying to repair the building.
“If I have damage, my insurance company’s where I’m going to get it fixed,” Phillips said. “And all I can think is they tried to blame it on floods and we don’t have flood insurance, maybe it’s on a floodplain or something. But there’s lots of, I did go over there and was there for a couple hours there other day looking at everything. It was shocking.”
Certified Municipal Finance Officer Ella Dishman said she does not know why insurance is not covering the damage. Dishman said she received a couple phone calls about potential bids.
“The building’s got some structural issues in the back corner,” Garcia said. “It’s had them for a little while but they just keep getting worse. So the structure has some gaps in the concrete block and now it’s affecting the roof as well.”
Garcia said the town will wait until the bid window expires on Wednesday, March 19 to start that search.
Dishman said she has not received any indication from the insurance company that the police station is not covered in the town’s insurance plan.
“The last thing I sent is the last thing I received, is for them to have an engineer look at it,” Dishman said.
