The Monterey Wildcats saw their season come to a close, under Head Coach Will Putnam.
The season concluded with a 5-19 record. Putnam said the feeling is bittersweet any time a season ends.
“I try my best to develop relationships with my players and be as open as I can to them and really just try to get all of us to be part of each other’s lives.” Putnam said. “Any time a season ends and you have to say goodbye to seniors, it’s not an easy thing so that was a difficult moment.”
Putnam said the toughest part about this season ending is not being able to coach his seniors.
Monterey finishes the season 2-8 in District 5AA. The Wildcats lost 71-50 in the quarterfinal matchup.
“The losses hurt, I hate the losses.” Putnam said. “Nobody wants to win more than me.”
Putnam said once you get past the losses, there was a lot on this season he reflected on positively.
“We overcame a tremendous amount.” Putnam said. “I thought we got better throughout the season.”
Putnam said winning two district games on the road, while sweeping a district opponent in the regular season are things he looked back on as improvements. Putnam also said the core of his team remains young despite losing three seniors after this season.
“I’m very excited about what the future holds for this program.” Putnam said.
