The Monterey High School Boys Soccer Team played its first game on the new Black Bottom Multi-use field Tuesday.
Monterey Mayor Alex Garcia said the field held up very well despite the field not being 100 percent ready. Garcia said he was pleased to see all the hard work the Board of Aldermen put into the field finally pay off.
“So this field was kind of a brain child for Nathan Walker our former mayor and to see it all come to fruition was a great site,” Garcia said. “I was out there last night and the concessions are almost ready to go. We have come a long way.”
Garcia said although the field held up well, there are still some improvements that need to be made. Garcia said he is already working to resolve the issues, including the parking.
“The field needs a flag, it’s got a flag pole with no flag on it so we are remedying that,” Garcia said. “The concessions need to be finished, which I just got off the phone with Putnam County Parks and Rec and they are hoping that they are gonna get the final for the electrical inspection next week so those will be done. The parking lot needs to be striped because people were kind of parking wider than they should have. We could have filled a little more spots, but all that is in the works and all of that is getting fixed.”
Garcia said the town is still getting a lot of inquiries about using the field. Garcia said he believes the field will have a positive economic impact on the town.
“I think it was great to see that,” Garcia said. “I think it was great just to look at the town and all the lights on all the fields on. I think it’s gonna bring an economic development and economic sources because when other schools come and play us, I’m hoping that they are gonna go to our restaruants or fill up at our gas stations and bring in that economic dollar.”
Garcia said the atmosphere for the first game was special and was packed. The game was an exhibition match against York Institute. The next home game for the Wildcats will be March 7 against Stone Memorial.
