The Overton County School Board has added two additional makeup days to this year’s calendar as the school system has run out of weather days and virtual days.
The dates for the makeup days are April 21 and May 22. Director of Schools Donnie Holman said the makeup days would only be used should the school system need them.
“We don’t have any days to make up as of now,” Holman said, “But we are just looking ahead thinking that there could be more snow days. Hopefully, there won’t be but if there are the board was giving the authority for us to make a change in the calendar.”
Holman said the state has already granted the school system an additional virtual day and that virtual day has already been used. Holman said the two dates were selected as the board is trying to avoid using make-up days during spring break.
“I know a lot of parents or some parents may have made plans for the spring break,” Holman said. “And we are trying not to dip into that spring break. We are trying to get around that if we can at all.”
Holman said he is concerned about another snowstorm coming through but a rumor that has gone around is making him feel better about things moving forward.
“Unofficially I have heard that there’s a possibility of us requesting to have up to five virtual days,” Holman said. “So we have already used three so if that were to be true we could possibly have two more virtual days and then with the two days that the board approved for us to use if needed the other night that would be giving us four days to deal with. So in a way, I feel pretty good about it. I feel like we got a pretty good plan for our school system.”
Holman said he has been in contact with various school directors in the Upper Cumberland and knows that three other school systems are in the same position as Overton County.
