Basketball District Championships Monday and Tuesday

The district semifinals and quarterfinals concluded Saturday with multiple Upper Cumberland teams emerging to play for district championships Monday and Tuesday nights.

Some schools who fell short still see their seasons continue, but will play for third place instead.

GIRLS:

Clay battles Pickett County in the District 7-A Championship. Clay looks to defeat Pickett County for the first time this season and win a district championship in the process. Pickett County enters play after their win over Gordonsville Friday night. They look to finish the season perfect in district competition.

Clarkrange will play in the third place game against Gordonsville. Clarkrange lost a close matchup in the semifinals Friday night, losing to Clay County 61-53. The season for Clarkrange continues as they look to collect third place against a Gordonsville team that lost by four points to Pickett County Friday.

Upperman faces Sparta in the District 7-AAA Championship. Upperman looks to avenge their only two losses in district play, which both came against the Warriorettes. White County looks to finish their season off with a six game win streak and an undefeated record in District 7-AAA tournament play.

Livingston will travel to Cumberland County to face the Lady Jets in the third place game. Livingston lost to White County Saturday and looks to head into regionals with a third place championship. To do so, the Lady Wildcats will need to defeat a Cumberland County team that defeated them twice this season. Cumberland looks for a bounce back themselves after losing to Upperman Saturday night.

Cookeville faces Lebanon for the District 7-AAAA Championship. The top two seeds square off Monday night in a matchup that sees both teams having won against each other in the regular season. Cookeville won their game at home, while Lebanon won theirs at Lebanon, where both teams will play tonight. Cookeville comes in having won their last two games, both against Stewart’s Creek. Lebanon has not lost since losing to Cookeville in January.

York confronts Smith County in the District 5-AA Championship. York defeated Jackson County to advance Saturday and will seek a third straight district championship, where they will play Smith County for the third year in a row. Smith County comes in having lost to York on February 13th.

Jackson County battles Watertown for third place in District 5-AA. Jackson County lost to York Saturday and looks to finish this year with a winning record against Watertown. Both teams won against each other going away this season. Watertown enters play having lost their last three straight games.

Warren County faces Shelbyville in the District 9-AAAA consolation game. Warren County lost to undefeated Coffee County Saturday night and looks for their tenth win of the season. They will secure third place with their tenth win and will need to defeat Shelbyville to get there. Shelbyville defeated Warren County in both matchups this regular season.

BOYS:

Clay battles Pickett in the District 7-A championship Tuesday night. Pickett defeated Clay in both matchups this season and looks to end their district season undefeated. Clay defeated Gordonsville in their semifinal matchup Friday night in a close matchup, winning by a score of 64-61. Pickett looks to repeat as district champions; they lost to Clay in the 2022-23 season in the district championship, marking Clay’s last district title.

Clarkrange faces Gordonsville in the third place game. Clarkrange heads back to Livingston Academy to play in the regional tournament after losing Friday night to Pickett County. Gordonsville enters play 16-11, with their last win coming against Clarkrange on February 11th.

Stone Memorial and Upperman head to Cumberland County to take part in the District 7-AAA Championship. Upperman defeated Stone in both matchups the two teams played against each other. Both teams won by double digits in their semifinal matchups and will have home games in the regional tournament later this week. Upperman will seek their third consecutive district championship. Stone looks for their first since the 2018-19 season.

Cookeville heads to Lebanon to take part in the District 7-AAAA championship. Cookeville knocked off Stewart’s Creek Saturday to compete for a championship. Lebanon will greet them at home, having defeated top seed LaVergne Saturday 51-48, part of having won five of their last six games. Cookeville seeks back-to-back district championships, while Lebanon looks for their first since the 2021-22 season.

Livingston battles DeKalb for third place. Livingston lost to Upperman Saturday night and will look to secure a district victory before traveling for regional tournament play. DeKalb lost to Stone Memorial 68-58 on Saturday and looks to triple their win total in district play with a win Tuesday night.

Jackson County looks for a District 5AA championship as they face Smith County. Jackson County will look to conclude their district season by improving on their 14 game win streak, currently the longest among Upper Cumberland teams. They seek back-to-back district championships. Smith County stands in their way, having defeated York in the semifinals Saturday.

York battles Watertown for third place in the district. York lost to Jackson County last week and looks for a better route for regional tournament play. Watertown enters this game after their loss to Smith County on Saturday.

Warren County faces Coffee County in the District 9-AAAA consolation game. Warren County lost to Lincoln County by three points Saturday. Coffee County enters play having lost to Shelbyville on Saturday.
