The Cumberland County Lady Jets and Upperman Lady Bees stand tied at second place in the final game for both teams in district play.
Both teams currently sport a 6-3 district record heading into play Friday night. The winner will receive second place in the district as well as a first round bye, guaranteeing themselves a spot in regional tournament play later this month. Cumberland Head Coach Randy Herring said he feels his team needs to start out better in the first half of games.
“We seem to be a little hesitant, but once I made the change starting in the second quarter, we started to get more in sync.” Herring said. “It took us a little while to really feel comfortable to get to the spot we needed to be.”
Upperman defeated Cumberland on the road 48-34 on January 24th. Cumberland broke their two game losing streak Tuesday night against Stone Memorial.
“Defensively, we really turned up the intensity in the second quarter.” Herring said. “[We] really just rode it throughout the rest of the game.”
Upperman Head Coach Dana McWilliams said her team needs to improve their shooting if they want to come out on top.
“I think we got a lot of room for improvement.” McWilliams said. “I think it’s just overall maybe just trying to improve everything as we move forward, not one specific detail or anything like that.”
Both teams have scored in bunches at times this season, with Upperman’s high this year rounding out at 82 points in December. Cumberland boasts a season high of 73 points, a mark they set in the Christmas Classic against Gordonsville on December 20th.
