Clay County School Board will move forward with a new risk management agreement, citing recent storms and workplace accidents.
Chairman Benji Bailey said the system has been with NGU Risk Management since 1989, except for one year when they learned their lesson. Bailey said despite the cost, this remains the best option for the County.
“We were telling the story today, I know one time, probably before me, we did, we did leave at one time and go to a local provider,” Bailey said. “And just the headache that, that presented to some of our office folks was terrible, but you guys have been great to work with and we appreciate you being here tonight.”
Bailey said that while insurance costs have risen, that is a nationwide issue. The policy covers things like workplace incidents, Workers’ Compensation claims, and weather-related damage.
Vice President Tom Montgomery said schools must be insured to avoid financial strain on the county. Montgomery said the coverage helps protect against unexpected costs that could cost the county millions.
“We also know, you don’t have to be a nerd like me and watch the Weather Channel all the time, but storms are coming east,” Montgomery said. “Back in 2020, we insured Wilson County schools. They had a tornado that hit two schools and ended up costing us.”
