Cornerstone Awaiting Results On Mold Treatment

Putnam County School Officials waiting on new test results to see if the mold issues at Cornerstone Elementary have been resolved.

Deputy Director of Schools Tim Martin said a company did mold remediation on a few specific rooms in the school over winter break. Martin said the district had to wait a month before mold testing again and he hopes to hear results by the end of this week.

“Even if there’s not issues, we’re going to continue monitoring the humidity and those types of things and look at what we need to do to keep this from happening again,” Martin said. ” Because like you say there’s got to be a reason in there somewhere and we don’t want it to come back.”

Martin said the school system installed ultraviolet air purifiers on all the rooftop HVAC units in the school after the remediation. Martin said the problem is suspected to have come about because of a humidity issue in the building.

“We had our air conditioning people down there looking to see if there’s anything that we can do and we’ll continue to do that,” Martin said. “Obviously that’s one of our older buildings so there may be some things, I know that we have replaced some of those rooftop units and we may have other pieces down there that we’ll have to replace eventually.”

Martin said the issue was originally brought up when the principal made a complaint about mold around late October or early November. Martin said the first mold test was conducted on November 18 and found unacceptable levels of mold in one storage room.

“They did find some elevated levels in two classrooms,” Martin said. “And that elevated level, again, not dangerous, just a little bit higher than it should have been.”
