Aviagen Looking To Expand In Crossville

Crossville City Council will consider the sell of property on Interchange Drive to a local chicken hatchery business.

City Manager Valerie Hale said Aviagen approached the city about purchasing a 14.75-acre portion of a property the city owns. Hale said Aviagen is a chicken hatchery business that is attempting to make a big investment.

“They’ve offered $25,000 per acre,” Hale said. “Aviagen is in the process of investing $100 million in the Upper Cumberland area and this new project is for a hatchery and they projected it will provide around 50 additional jobs.”

Crossville Director of Engineering Tim Begley said the portion of the property that Aviagen is requesting to purchase is further off the road and would provide some privacy for the hatchery. Begley said the portion of the property also may be easier to develop than the rest of the property.

“The other side has had a lot of the soil removed and right under the wording if you look at that parcel it’s pretty flat in that area,” Begley said. “We think it would take less grading in that area for the hatchery.”

Hale said Aviagen already has a location in Crossville on Industrial Boulevard. The city council will consider selling the portion of the property during next week’s council meeting.
