Jackson HS Students Gain Experience Through “On My Own” Simulation

Jackson County High School students are getting some real-world experience that has nothing to do with careers and jobs.

Principal Jason Hardy said that the school has been partnering with UT Extension to send students through the “On My Own Simulation.” The program helps students understand more about the economics of being on their own.

“As they find out once they move up in levels in life, things like cell phones and entertainment are not as important because the budget has to go to things like daycare and groceries and insurance,” Hardy said. “So it’s really eye-opening knowing that going out in hte world that even what they may be making if they’re working a part-time job does not stretch that much once you get out there.”

Hardy said that each student is given a scenario such as single, married, or have kids and create a budget based on that lifestyle. He said they then utilize community partners like local insurance companies who work with them throughout the process.

Hardy said that the targets of the program are the personal finance and economics classes, but that all students will eventually take part in the program.
