Upgraded UC Police Presence Expected For St. Patrick’s Day

Several Upper Cumberland agencies will increase patrols for St. Patrick’s Day.

McMinnville Police Department Master Patrol Officer Andy Aguilar said an upgraded police presence will be out Thursday to ensure driver safety.

“We encourage safe St. Patrick’s Day celebrations,” Aguilar said. “Our biggest recommendation is to have a game plan before you go out and celebrate. Whether that be a designated driver or the intention to not drive at all.”

Aguilar said McMinnville usually experiences an uptick in DUIs and DUI related accidents on this holiday. Aguilar said driving under the influence is a selfish decision that impacts more than just the driver.

“It’s a split second decision for most people, but it is a very selfish decision at that,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar said DUIs extend further than just drinking alcohol. Aguilar said use of marijuana and other drugs can also impact your ability to operate a vehicle.

“It’s important for all of us to be cognizant of what has effects on your system that might impair your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle,” Aguilar said.
