L&N Caboose Begins Makes The Move To Baxter

The L&N Caboose began the move from the Cookeville Depot Museum to Baxter this morning.

Driver Max Currin said that the most tedious part of the move is actually getting the caboose and wheels settled on their respective trucks.

“The drive to Baxter is going to be pretty good because we done drove that and looked at a route,” Currin said. “We’ve just got to watch the cars and everything because we’re interacting with other traffic. I guess the tedious thing is getting it loaded and getting it situated, but once it’s situated it’s there.”

Currin said that truck itself is 97 and-a-half feet long. He said that the biggest concern when it comes to the move itself is clearance. He said that the drivers will have to be cognizant of turns, the top height, and the bottom of the car.

The L&N Caboose was donated to the city by Seaboard System Railroad in 1986. The caboose was the first one at the Depot, and Cookeville later acquired its Tennessee Central caboose and the steam engine.
