Court Dismisses Defamation Lawsuit Filed By Former Overton Teacher

Circuit Court Judge Jonathan Young has dismissed the defamation case filed by former Overton County teacher Mark Lee.

Young dismissed the case with prejudice and a $10,000 fee against Lee to dissuade, “Similar actions to try to embarrass and silence young women and their families who are alleged victims of sexual harassment.”

Lee brought the lawsuit against victims, parents and supporters who accused him of sexual harassment. In his opinion, Young said, “They were properly exercising their right to free speech.”

Young said, “Any person with a cell phone and social media is considered a journalist today,” and should, “Receive the same Constitutional protection.”

Young determined Lee as a, “Public figure,” and said, “There are no lesser or greater public figures under the law.” In Young’s opinion, a “Overton County teacher is on par with the President of the United States, a Kardashian or any other public figure.”
