A USDA grant application to work on storm water in Gainesboro’s downtown received approval from the Gainesboro Board of Aldermen Thursday night.
Engineer Nathaniel Green said the $30,000 grant would come with a partnership from Tennessee Tech. Green said he believes Gainesboro has a strong application because of having a partner.
“The big thing that I think they’re wanting to do is to get an actual land surveyor in here,” Green said. “To provide some topography and some certain elevations so that ultimately it will lead to, hopefully a future project.”
This grant would fully fund the project, meaning no cost to Gainesboro. Green said that specifically this would address storm water around the square and Doe Creek. He said the topography study would verify elevations and sizes of the storm water facility.
Mayor Lloyd Williams said applying for the grant seemed obvious.
“There ain’t nothing like those grants where you ain’t got to pay anything,” Williams said. “But they put a lot of work into it. I’ve seen their finished product with their videos and everything. It seems like a win to me, I don’t see why we wouldn’t do it.”
Green said the city’s application will be submitted this month. Green said that Tennessee Tech originally approached the town about the grant.
