The end of the Tennessee General Assembly session is in sight.
House Speaker Cameron Sexton said legislative work could finish as soon as the first week of May.
“We are still working some on the budget, so hopefully, we’ll have the budget passed the last week of April hopefully,” Sexton said. “That is probably the biggest thing left, and once we get that then that will open up. There is opportunities for bills that are funded or not funded and what needs to continue to move forward and what doesn’t.”
Sexton said the state budget looks good, but spending is conservative due to unknowns of the future economy. Sexton said other legislation like Governor Lee’s Criminal Justice Reform and some unemployment trust fund bills are still in the works.
“We’re being very cautious in trying to not spend a lot of money and if we have recurring dollars trying to spend it on one time,” Sexton said. “We’re not sure how long the economy might hold based on how much money the federal government is spending.”
