A $1,000 dollar grant will help the Friends of Animals of Jackson County work on the community’s cat population.
President Julie Jacobson said cats can become pregnant as young as three months old.
“What we are actually seeing is cats are in heat and becoming pregnant as young as 3 months old, so they’re easily mothers before they’re six months old so waiting until they’re six months old is simply too late,” Jacobson said.
The PETCO grant can help spay and neuter up to 30 cats.
“I think we’re very similar to most of the counties in the Upper Cumberland, in that we have no animal control and no shelter of any kind, so there isn’t a place to bring strays or unwanted litters and again that’s true for most of the counties in the Upper Cumberland,” Jacobson said.
Jacobson said that programs within the Upper Cumberland have made more progress with dogs than cats.
“Just one male around can really wreak havoc, what we’re seeing in Jackson County is people have 10 or more cats before they call us,” Jacobson said.
